Researchers say they have created fiber cables that can move data at 99.7 percent of the speed of light, all but eliminating the latency plaguing standard fiber technology. There are still data loss problems to be overcome before the cables could be used over long distances, but the research may be an important step toward incredibly low-latency data transmissions.

Although optic fibers transmit information using beams of light, that information doesn't actually go at "light speed." The speed of light, about 300,000 km/s, is the speed light travels in a vacuum. In a medium such as glass, it goes about 30 percent slower, a mere 200,000 km/s.

Chinese Copper Wire Prices Fall 0.7%

Chinese copper wire saw the biggest price decline of the day, dropping 0.7 percent on March 26, 2013. The price of Chinese copper bar fell 0.5 percent. The Chinese copper cash price saw a0.5 percent decline. Following a two-day rise, the price of Chinese bright copper scrap flattened.

The price of US copper producer grade 122 fell 0.5 percent. The price of US copper producer grade 110 declined 0.5 percent. The price of US copper producer grade 102 weakened by 0.5 percent. The Japanese copper cash price remained essentially flat.

Asia One Marine has introduced its Fishcable this year, which aims to reduce pollution caused by ropes greased with petrol based or synthetic chemical greases.

The company says that when large fishing boats use wire ropes on decks and in the sea, their catch may touch the wire ropes of the nets and seines.
